Kyrgyz nature

Kyrgyz nature

Landscape. Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country. The most part of Kyrgyzstan enters into a mountain system of Tien-Shan and only the outskirts of south-west refer to Pamir-Alai. The highest point is Pobeda Peak or Jengish-Chokusu (7349 m.); it is situated in Tien-Shan in the east of the country, at the border with China. Many ridges of Tien-Shan- Talas Alatau, Kyrgyz, Kyungei- Ala-Too, Terskei-Ala-too and others have mainly sub latitudinal strike. Large Fergana ridge is oriented from the north-west to the south-east, and Kakshal-Too ridge from the south-west to the north-east (along the border with China) with only one pass within Tien-Shan Torugart (3752 m.). There is an intermountain trough between ridges Kungei-Ala-Too and Terske-Ala-Too, the bottom of which is occupied with a huge lake Issyk-Kul s.c. "Kyrgyz sea". Northwards of Kyrgyz ridge is situated a submontane Chui trough, which is more disbursed and densely populated part of the state. Vast Fergana cavity enters into boundaries of Kyrgyzstan only with its peripheral parts. In Kyrgyz part of Pamir-Alai predominate sublatitudinal elements of relief-Alai ridge, Alai valley, Turkestan and Zaalai ridges (thehighest peak-Lenin Peak, 7134 m.). In the eastern part Zaalai ridge is crossed by Pamir highroad near the pass Kyzyl-Art. There is glaciation on the upper stage of mountains. Snow line is situated at an altitude about 3 km. on peripheral ridges and 4,0-4,5 on inner ridges. Different types of glaciers are presented. The largest of them are dendritic (Southern Inylchek with the length 59, 5 km. and Northern Inylchek -38,2 km.), which have several glaciers-tributaries. In addition valley and hanging glaciers are spread and glaciers with flat tops are typical for Tien-Shan. Tien-Shan is reach with water resources and is the main provider of moisture for the surrounding arid plains.

Water resources. There are more than 3000 lakes in Kyrgyzstan including picturesque Issyk-Kul Lake; it is one of the deepest lakes in the world (maximum depth 668 m.). Large rivers as Chu, Naryn and Talas spring from high mountains. Chu flows in the north along it for a distance of 145 km. goes a border of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Naryn River interflows with Karadarya River and make Syr Darya, which flows to the east into Fergana valley. Talas drains north-eastern Kyrgyzstan.

Climate. Kyrgyzstan has continental climate. Western and northern flanks of hills receive a lot of precipitation. Amount of precipitation increases with the height to 5000 m.. At big altitudes precipitation fall as a snow and even in summer frosts are possible. Average annual rainfall in the northern slopes is about 750 mm., in the south-western slopes of Fergana ridge- 950 mm., in the north-eastern-230 mm.

Average temperatures of January are fluctuating from -2º to -8ºC in valleys and from -8º to 20º in middle altitude mountains. In high mountains average January temperature is about -28ºC. There is often thaw in winter in many regions of Kyrgyzstan except high mountains. Summer is hot and dry, with average temperature of July 20-27ºC in valleys, 15-17ºC in middle altitude mountains, 5ºC and lower in high mountains.

Flora and Fauna. Flora of Kyrgyzstan distinguishes with great diversity and not less of 1/4 of all endemic species. For Tien-Shan is typical presence of forest belt with Tien-Shan spruce, which then changes into a bush of archa and subalpine meadows. In some areas of the northern mountain enclosure remained carycarpous woods (from Circassian walnut). In high mountains are widely spread subalpine and alpine meadows, which were used for many years as summer pastures for sheep. At the highest levels of relief is widely spread subnival belt with stone placers and snowfields. Herbal plants are not numerous; mosses and lichen are more numerous. In foothills are widely spread ephemeral deserts, semideserts and dry steppes, which then change into a shrubby verdure and light forests.

There is Caucasian goat teke, wild sheep, ounce, stone marten, dhole, grey and red mountain marmots in high mountains. In mountain forest belt are widely spread roe, wolf, ermine, wild boar, lynx, brown bear, fox and marten. For steppe mountain regions and adjoining flats are typical numerous species of gnawing animals including yellow souslik, great jerboa, Libyan jird, different reptiles, hoofed mammals as goitered gazelle, birds as partridge, bustard.
